The shadows are now lengthening and there is the unmistakable cooling of the evenings that point to the impending transformation from the languid days of the warmest season to the long nights of winter, rapidly approaching. Down a leaf strewn path,... heading west and south a freshet crosses the trail. Oaks and cottonwoods shroud the route to the quaint little burg known to many as Melvern. In that pastoral locale, an unimaginable event of a horrific magnitude unknown to mankind until now will take place. As zombies rising from their graves, Cryin’ Out Loud returns to Legends. With their flesh barely clinging to their carcasses, suspended like the southern moss on a swamp tree, they will bring the ghostly ethereal sounds of days gone by and yet to come and all points in between. The skeletal remains of loved ones long gone will come out of their dank resting places and create a rattling gyration that will chill you to your ivory frame.

No offerings to the dead will save you from the aural onslaught you will face if you’re brave enough to venture into Legends in that fearsome hour of darkness. There is no need to fear however, for there will be no quarter given and all will face the same fate if they should choose to tempt that unforgiving mistress. Do you dare to face the hideous creatures calling, nay! Cryin’ Out Loud?

These mp3's are from the Cryin' Out Loud demo cd (not for resale), including a few originals and several covers of diverse origins. These recordings give the listener only a sample of the wide range of Cryin' Out Loud material, as the band has around 100 songs in its normal repertoire, ranging from the late 1800's to nowadays. Some are well-known, some are popular generally only in certain niches, and some are fairly well obscure and delightfully recognized by true aficionados of a particular genre. Finally, there are a handful of originals sprinkled throughout.

Cryin' Out Loud

Cryin' Out Loud

is:

Marc Koch - vocals & acoustic guit, kazoo
Steve Dahlberg - vocals & tele guit, trumpet
  Steve Eddy - drums
  Kirk Larson - fretless bass
Matt Dollar - pedal steel guit, banjo

Cryin' Out Loud (formerly Coyote Ugly) is an eastern Kansas area band that has been playing its own blend of swingin' twanged-out garagabilly honkytonkification for a handful of years now around the area in bars and clubs, at weddings and parties, on farms and in pole barns, and in city parks and cafes. The members are all veterans of and represent a diverse and rich lineage in the Lawrence, regional, and in some cases national music scene reaching back through the early 1980's.

These guys' eclectic roots in punk, classical, ballad, jazz, and yester-year's ear-splitting garage and alt rock appear today as nuances in a unique blend of traditional and modern, driving and melodic, recognizable and obscure. Or more simply, this music ranges from ass-whoopin' stampede stomp to tear-in-your-eye raunch to nice n' pretty. The Cryin' Out Loud sound is created by players whose musical journeys have collectively traversed jazz and classical, college alt-rock and punk, folk and country, hillbilly and rockabilly, progressive rock and blues, Deadhead and psychedelic, subway-singing and coffee-house acoustic story-telling, with a bit of reggae and ska and even experimental electronica thrown in along the way. Not to worry though; you won't hear any experimental electronica at a Cryin' Out Loud show.

photo of Marc
Marc Koch  Marc spent ten years in the alternative rock band "Get Smart" which was based out of Lawrence and later Chicago. They toured the country coast-to-coast and recorded several releases, sharing stages with many notable artists. Marc is proud of the opportunity to have been part of an early movement in alternative rock that helped forge a path for a genre that over time has become widespread and well-evolved.

photo of Stevie D
Steve Dahlberg  Steve has played the Lawrence music scene for years, collaborating in recording studios, playing out in bands (including Blue Fuse, Britt & His Country Gentlemen, and Ricky Dean Sinatra to name a few) and as a singer-songwriter, covering the gamut on these musical trails from hard rock to alt-garage post-punk to electronic experimental to reggae/ska/calypso to alt-pop to rockabilly to jukebox country to blues to Cryin' Out Loud. A firm believer in the idea that there are diamonds and feces in all genres of music (except for whatever gemless category American Idol falls into), he gets off on seeing how much variety can be packed into the mildly-restrained range of material that Cryin' Out Loud vaguely conforms to.

photo of Steve E
Steve Eddy  Steve played in the popular regional band The Mortal Micronotz (later just The Micronotz). They recorded several albums, toured and shared the stage with bands such as the Ramones, X, Wall of Voodoo and Black Flag. After the 'Notz, Steve played with a rock band in Houston before returning to Kansas. He records occasionally with Lawrence band The Mahoots and moves into more of a rockin' honkytonk and traditional groove with Cryin' Out Loud.

photo of Kirk
Kirk Larson  Kirk has a diverse classical and popular background on the bass, and played at the infamous and controversial K.U. nude production of "Hair", and more recently in the hardcore Mind's Eye Theatre production of "Rocky Horror" at the Just Off Broadway Theatre in Kansas City. In the Lawrence music scene, he played in a series of local bands, including eclectic prog-rock band Random Aztech, before driving the Cryin' Out Loud bottom line with his fretless fingers.

photo of Matt
Matt Dollar  Matt Dollar is a multi-talented player who has worked on many projects with scene musicians over the years, and was a lifetime member of the venerable local roots and psychedelic band the Lonesome Hound Dogs, and he also teaches guitar at Americana Music Academy. After a stint in Boston with New England country boogie and western swing stalwarts the Twilight Ranchers, he's back in Lawrence and twangin' up the pedal steel guitar with Cryin' Out Loud again.
